What is the Women in Golf Programme?
This unique programme:
- Offers an introduction to golf to women of any age
- Allows women who are not members of a golf club to participate
- Makes it easy for women to start playing golf
- Encourages participants play and join a golf club
- Helps women progress to a level where they can compete with others, or simply enjoy playing a healthy, relaxing sport for the rest of their lives.
The Irish Ladies Golf Union along with the Irish Sports Council are working together to implement the “Women in Golf” programme which is geared to women who are complete beginners (not existing members of a golf club). It is aimed at increasing the number of women and girls participating in golf and in particular joining golf clubs and becoming regular active players.
In 2008, ILGU membership figures show that 80% of golf clubs have vacancies for female members (women and girls).
To help promote the wide range of opportunities that are available for females of all ages, the ILGU is working alongside golf clubs to increase membership and support greater participation by women in golf.
The ILGU will help Clubs interested in increasing their female membership by facilitating a “Women in Golf” programme at their club.
The Programme will:
- Offer beginners coaching in group sessions
- Deliver coaching by a fully qualified PGA professional
- Run Beginner competitions (9 hole scramble) supported by competent golfers who will introduce beginners to the rules and etiquette of the game
- Facilitate participation in groups of similar ability which overcomes the barriers for women who would like to try the game
- Advise clubs on initiatives that help to attract female members.
- Participants in the programme will be required to pay a nominal fee for which they will receive a series of coaching sessions and participate in a beginners' golf competition. The ILGU and ISC will fund the balance of the coaching cost.
How can clubs apply for the programme?
- Clubs must appoint a member(s) of the Ladies Committee to act as a co-ordinator for the programme
- The Ladies Committee must be fully aware and actively involved in the implementation of the programme at club level
- The Club co-ordinator must complete the attached form and return it to Irish Ladies Golf Union at the address provided
- A Club applying for the programme must be open for female membership If approved for the programme, an ILGU coordinator will contact the club and arrange to meet the Ladies Committee and get the programme underway.
