McVeigh 6th at Portuguese Open

Daniele McVeigh (RCDL) finished joint 6th in an elite field of 90 at the 80th Portuguese International Ladies Amateur Open Championship, Oceanico O'Connor Jnr Course, Portugal, 28-31 January 2010.
McVeigh fired an impressive closing round of 70 to leave her 10 strokes behind Spain’s Anna Arrese who closed out pace setter Lara Katzy (Ger) with an astonishing five-under-par 67 on the final day. Katzy closed with a level par 72 to finish second while Tara Davies (Wal) signed for a 75 to finish joint fourth and best of the GB&I players, one place ahead of McVeigh.
Cork’s Gillian O’Leary rounded off a great week’s work with a closing 74 to finish joint 24th. Earlier Maria Dunne (Skerries), Aedin Murphy (Carlow), Victoria Bradshaw (Bangor), Sarah Cunningham (Ennis), Ciara Butler (Newlands) and Louise Mernagh (Woodenbridge) missed the 14-over-par cut after 54 holes.
The focus now shifts to the Hacienda del Alamo Winter Festival at the 5 star resort, 13-20 February, where the top amateurs will be looking to impress the GB&I selectors ahead of April’s Curtis Cup team announcement.
