Irish Womens Open Stroke Play Championship - Results

England’s Lucy Goddard led from wire to wire to win her first Irish Women’s Open Amateur Strokeplay title at Douglas Golf Club, Cork, 25 May.

Having led the field by one stroke yesterday morning with an opening 71, she held the overnight lead by the slimmest of margins over Castletroy’s Chloe Ryan after an afternoon 74. Ryan herself had fired a best of the tournament 69 in the wind and rain of Saturday afternoon.

In the final round, Ryan started strongly to make the turn in two under par and take a one shot lead over Goddard into the final nine holes. Undeterred by her opponent’s comeback, Goddard steadied herself and turned the championship once again with a fine eagle 3 on the long fourteenth. Although Goddard bogeyed 17, her one shot margin on the eighteenth tee was enough to secure victory as she two putted for a regulation par on the home green.

Ireland won the Nations Cup by 3 strokes from England with Wales in third.
